What is the best job for someone who just likes to play games? What can you do with a major in Game Theory?

Question:

I can play games 24/7 and never get bored. I have made some money playing online games like Poker (Limit holdem) but not much. I love chess, monopoly, fantasy sports, card games, video games etc. I am currently in college and this fall will enter my third year studying for a BA in accounting. I decided to go into accounting because it’s a safe bet to get a good job, and there is an outside chance I can apply to get into the FBI. What would you suggest as a good career for a person who only loves playing games? I think I might just hope to make $60,000 as an accountant and use a good portion of that money as a bankroll to play with at the casino in holdem and blackjack on weekends. Someone told me they are getting a major in Game Theory and it sounds right up my alley, but what kind of job makes use of game theory skills? I imagine it’s a lot of math ——- I can’t think of a practical use for game theory skills aside from playing games

  • Well, the obvious job for a Game Theory major is game design…not just video games but board games as well. The benefit of the former is that video game designers often double as game beta testers as well – working out the kinks of the games before they’re released. However, if you go that route you’ll likely need significant computer skills, either programming or graphic design are the most applicable. Of course, if you really have top-notch gaming skills, you can always go pro…the a-list gamers actually pull in some serious money (both prizes and endorsements).
